SUMMARY:Radiance in Pain and Resilience: The Global Reverberation of Palest
 inian Historical Trauma
DESCRIPTION:Princeton\, New Jersey. This lecture extends a compassionate in
vitation to participants\, encouraging them to navigate the profound histo
rical trauma ingrained in the Palestinian experience and its global reperc
ussions. It sheds light on the lasting impact of this trauma on representa
tion and well-being\, especially in the face of the continuous distressing
  military attacks on Gaza.\n\nEmbarking on a comprehensive exploration\, t
he lecture delves into the deep-seated historical trauma endured by the Pa
lestinian people\, a trauma further intensified by prolonged repression an
d recurrent military violence. Grounded in the wisdom of Edward Said\, the
session delves into the psychological dimensions of displacement\, dispos
session\, and cultural distortion. It examines how these elements intricat
ely contribute to the acute challenges in representation and well-being am
id the ongoing turmoil.\n\nExamining resilience becomes paramount in this
context\, exploring the fortitude found in cultural expressions\, communal
bonds\, and international solidarity as essential sanctuaries amidst heig
htened trauma. The lecture emphasizes the critical role of cultural identi
ty in preserving well-being and navigating the deep wounds of history. Add
itionally\, it illuminates how Israel’s facing charges of genocide befor
e the International Court of Justice contributes to the redress and healin
g process of the Palestinian people.\n\nReflecting on intellectual empower
ment emerges as a key aspect\, serving as a healing tool amid ongoing conf
licts. The discussion highlights how Edward Said’s vision of intellectua
l responsibility offers a framework for psychological resilience and repre
sentation in the face of historical trauma.\n\nThis lecture intentionally
leaves room for more questions than answers\, urging the audience to embar
k on a collective exploration of urgent pathways toward healing and resili
ence amidst the ongoing historical trauma in Palestine — a trauma with g
lobal repercussions that echo with pain.\n\nSamah Jabr is a Palestinian J
erusalemite psychiatrist\, psychotherapist and writer\, and chair\, since
2016\, of the Mental Health Unit at the Palestinian Ministry of Health. In
spired by anticolonial psychiatrist Frantz Fanon\, her areas of interest i
