SUMMARY:Soldiers of Democracy? Military Legacies and the Arab Spring
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nThe Middle East Policy Forum at the Elliott School of Int
 ernational Affairs will host this conversation on how the militaries in Tu
 nisia and Egypt acted during and after the 2011 uprisings in those two cou
 ntries. Dr. Sharan Grewal\, author of Soldiers of Democracy? Military Lega
 cies and the Arab Spring\, will highlight how dictators’ choices to eith
 er empower or marginalize the military creates legacies that shape both th
 e likelihood of democratization and the forms by which it breaks down.\n\n
 Dr. Grewal will discuss his new book with Kuwait Professor of Gulf and Ara
 bian Affairs Gordon Gray\, who served as the U.S. Ambassador to Tunisia at
  the start of the Arab Spring.\n\nThe book talk is a hybrid event. You may

 m the ExxonMobil Corporation.\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n 	\nDr. Sharan Grewal i
 s an Assistant Professor of Government at the College of William &amp\; Ma
 ry and a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. He receiv
 ed a PhD in Politics from Princeton University in 2018\, and was a post-do
 ctoral fellow at Brookings from 2018-19. In 2023-24\, he is a research fel
 low at the Middle East Initiative at Harvard.\n\n 	\nAmb. Gordon Gray is t
 he Kuwait Professor of Gulf and Arabian Peninsula Affairs at the Elliott S
 chool of International Affairs at George Washington University. Prior to h
 is retirement from the U.S. government after 35 years of public service\, 
 Ambassador Gray was the Deputy Commandant at the National War College. He 
 was the U.S. Ambassador to Tunisia from 2009 until 2012\, witnessing the s
 tart of the Arab Spring and directing the U.S. response in support of Tuni
 sia’s transition.\n\n\n
