On World Refugee Day, June 20, 2019, join us for a sunset run/walk & candlelight vigil in support of refugees around the globe.

The Sunset Run for Refugees is a special event on the evening of Thursday, June 20th, World Refugee Day, involving the runners, walkers, and fitness community of Washington, DC, and will culminate in a candlelight display and vigil at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool after the sun sets.

Runners and walkers will come together to form a caravan of light and hope for refugees that will surround the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool as the sun goes down on World Refugee Day here in the nation’s capital. The entire vigil should last about 20 minutes and there will be photographers and videographers on hand to capture the display.

WALKERS ARE WELCOME, TOO!

The annual Sunset Run for Refugees has attracted over 500 attendees across its two-year lifespan. This year, we hope that this all-volunteer effort can bring out at least 1,000 participants from throughout the DC area so that we can fully envelop the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool with candlelight on World Refugee Day.

GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY’S ELLIOT SCHOOL OF INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS IS AN OFFICIAL CO-SPONSOR and will be our official check-in/candle distribution point for the run/walk.

WHAT IS WORLD REFUGEE DAY?

Established by Resolution of the United Nations General Assembly in 2000 and occurring each year on June 20th, World Refugee Day is an international observance intended to call attention to the plight of refugees and individuals displaced from their homes due to war, violence, and persecution. The first World Refugee Day was observed in 2001, coinciding with the 50-year anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. Each year on June 20th there are numerous events around the globe designed to raise awareness of the tremendous struggles refugees face and urge action toward solutions.

THERE IS NO COST TO ATTEND THIS EVENT AND NO TICKET REQUIRED, but we encourage all participants to register through Eventbrite and to please donate to the refugee relief organizations through the event website.
