SUMMARY:Syrian Displacement and the Prospects of Return
DESCRIPTION:HOUSTON\, TEXAS\n\nOn Dec. 8\, 2024\, the world watched as Bash
ar al-Assad’s regime fell following the takeover of Syria by the opposit
ion group led by Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham. The 2011 uprising and subsequent 1
3-year civil war devastated the country\, forcing more than 6 million Syri
ans to flee abroad\, mostly to neighboring countries and Europe\, and disp
lacing another 7 million internally. As Syria enters a new phase under a t
ransitional government\, refugees now face the difficult decision of wheth
er to return home.\nThis event will feature a panel of experts who will ex
plore the following questions:\n\n\n \nHow has Syrian displacement affect
ed regional politics\, societal shifts\, and global refugee protection pol
icies?\n\n \nWhat choices do Syrian refugees displaced both abroad and in
ternally face today?\n\n How has more than a decade of war impacted the h
umanitarian conditions in Syria and the prospects for refugee return?\n\nT
his discussion will provide valuable insights into the long-term consequen
ces of the Syrian conflict\, the challenges of global displacement\, and t
he future of refugee reintegration. This event will be co-hosted by the B
aker Institute Edward P. Djerejian Center for the Middle East and Every
Shelter\, a Houston-based humanitarian design firm focused on solutions fo
r generational displacement. It is free and open to the public.
