Advanced Arabic to English Interpreting 5-day programme taught live online

About this event

This is an Advanced Arabic to English interpreting tuition delivered by academic specialists and professionals in the field.

This 5-day intensive course will cover core interpreting skills to get you started as an Arabic/English interpreter and strengthen your remote interpreting skills if you are already practicing interpreting. It will provide approximately 25 hours of tuition for the week, with emphasis on practice in small groups and individual feedback. The highlight of the course are our two events: a simulated 03-hour events where you will be interpreting on the booths and getting feedback from our teaching team and a real-life event- International Arabic Day event-, a live conference, where you will have the opportunity to practice in the virtual dummy booths and observe professionals at work.

During the course, you will also have access to the virtual booths, our learning platforms (Canvas, and GoReact) as well as access to Heriot-Watt university library material.

The core course consists of lectures and hands-on sessions that cover the following topics:

• Speaking Skills: Rephrasing and active listening

• Interpreting Skills: Introduction to simultaneous interpreting and practical sessions using virtual booths (Interactio and Zoom) to practice interpreting and relay interpreting

• Interpreting Skills: Introduction to consecutive interpreting covering note taking techniques and practical sessions (Arabic, French, English).

• Interpreting Skills: Introduction to liaison interpreting and practical sessions in a simulated environment featuring a multi-lingual speaking event (Arabic, French, English).

• This course is dedicated to Arabic/English interpreting. You can also practice with French if this is one of your languages (not mandatory to attend the course) or practice your relay skills.

Although the course is delivered online, you are welcome to visit and stay on campus during the course. Accommodation can be arranged on campus at the Mariott Hotel at a special rate for participants to the Winter School. Booking at the Mariott should be arranged with the hotel directly. We will provide you with the discount code at registration.

The Heriot-Watt University campus contains a number of cafeterias and restaurants, as well as a campus shop and a bank. Larger supermarkets are a short bus ride away, and the city centre can be reached in about 25 minutes by bus or 20 by taxi. Night buses serve the campus throughout the night, so returning to the campus late after an evening out is never a problem.
