For years, Lebanese political and economic institutions have failed to address the many challenges facing the country. Today, Lebanon’s presidency is ineffective in arbitrating different institutional and partisan disputes; its parliament is paralyzed with competing factional interests and elite preferences; and its government is in caretaker mode and unable to mitigate the ongoing crises. Speakers at this webinar will discuss the serious problems inherent in Lebanon’s politics and will consider the chances for a breakthrough from the current stalemate, including the prospects for compromise.
They will explore how political paralysis affects the country’s economy and development. The presenters will also respond to the following questions: What conditions of governance have led to the current collapse of the economy? How do the Lebanese people experience the political and economic troubles of the country? What degrees of mobilization and activism are present—and necessary—to deal with the coming slide into the abyss?
