SUMMARY:The Marsh Arab Story: Ancient Culture\, Modern Lives
DESCRIPTION:HOUSTON\, TX\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\n\n\nIn Partnership with
  the Arab American Educational Foundation\n\nTwo great rivers - the Tigres
  and the Euphrates - created the largest wetland ecosystem in Western Eura
 sia. In this vast fertile region\, civilization was born 5\,000 years ago\
 , the first literate societies emerged\, cities developed\, and trade and 
 complex state bureaucracies evolved.. The Marsh Arabs\, the Maʻdān\,\, a
 re descendants of the ancient Sumerians and Akkadians and are groups of tr
 ibal people who make their home in this lush environment. This group of pe
 ople developed a unique culture in antiquity centered on the marshes' natu
 ral resources. All of this changed in the 1990s due to warfare and environ
 mental destruction. Today\, this group is endangered. Cultural and environ
 mental destruction threatens all of us\, not only the Marsh Arabs.  By wo
 rking to preserve their culture\, we are working to preserve a part of col
 lective humanity and to discover lessons for solving future issues involvi
 ng cultural and ecological destruction.\n\nThis is their story.\n\nThis ev
