David Lewis, Seminar Leader of the Renaissance Society Big History and Ancient Egypt Classes

About this event

This program sponsored by The Renaissance Society of Sac State is open to the community! Meet on the Sac State Campus, in Del Norte Hall, Room 1004. The program is free, but a small campus parking fee may apply. Details can be found here: https://www.csus.edu/college/social-sciences-interdisciplinary-studies/renaissance-society/seminars.html#our-free-summer-program

Join David Lewis, seminar leader of the Big History Class and Ancient Egypt, for a presentation on Cleopatra. She has been the subject of numerous movies. Who can forget Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra and Richard Burton as Caesar? But were those Cleopatras anywhere near the real Cleopatra? In some ways yes, but in many ways no. For example, she was only one of seven Cleopatras. In this session we will start with the tumultuous world of her birth and end with a death unlike that depicted in the movies.

David Lewis David Lewis is one of the many non-historian Renaissance Society seminar leaders. Until the spring of 2021, he had concentrated on his Big History presentations on Mesopotamia. He has led a seminar on Ancient Egypt for Renaissance for the past two semesters.

Immediately following the presentation, folks will meet at Del Norte Hall to participate in a brown bag lunch in a shady spot on campus.

You are invited to join the campus tour after lunch where we will explore several Hidden Gems: Pony Express Marker; Guy West Bridge; and the Sacramento Mural. Meet at Del Norte Hall at 12:30, no registration is required.

Sac State & Renaissance COVID Safety Plan Protocols: To participate in summer programs on the Sac State campus requires:

1. Be fully vaccinated – Participants are required to be fully vaccinated to participate in indoor programs on the Sac State campus. On Dec. 22, 2021, the CSU Chancellor’s office announced that it requires faculty, staff, and students to receive booster shots to be fully immunized against COVID-19 and comply with the CSU Vaccination Policy.  As a third-party event, RS program participation accepts no medical or religious exemptions.

2. Vaccination self-attestation – Participants will read, complete, and sign a vaccination self-attestation sheet when entering the program classroom or participate in a tour. Attestation will include showing your COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card.

3. Face masks – The wearing of face masks is optional when attending programs indoors on the Sac State campus. Participants are expected to bring their own face masks.

4. Social distance – Everyone is encouraged to social distance to whatever extent possible within the classrooms. This is not required by the current university policies but is desired to honor Renaissance members’ safety wishes expressed in recent surveys. A minimum distance of three feet and a preferred distance of six feet is the RS social distancing standard.
