About the Webinar

The parliamentary elections in Iraq are scheduled to take place on October 10, 2021, and constitute the fifth parliamentary vote since the US-led invasion of the country in 2003. The elections will decide the 329 members of the Council of Representatives, who will then elect the president and prime minister of Iraq. The complexity of the Iraqi political system, which is defined primarily along sectarian and ethnic lines, coupled with the popular protests in recent years calling for the removal of the entire political class, make this election particularly critical to Iraq’s volatile domestic affairs and the legitimacy and conduct of its government. To that end, Arab Center Washington DC is convening a panel of Iraq experts to discuss the significance of these elections and the implications of the outcomes. Speakers will also address the multiple players and candidates, the turnout and results especially following calls for boycott from prominent Iraqi leaders, the fairness and credibility of the process and representativeness of the system, and internal and external reactions. They will also consider the ramifications of the turnout and outcomes for Iraq, the region, and beyond, and what these herald for the much needed reforms and democratic governance in Iraq.
