DESCRIPTION:VOICES OF RESISTANCE AND HERITAGE: Stories of Kurdish Women and
  Culture celebrates the courage and resilience of Kurdish women who have 
 fought for freedom and self-determination amidst war and revolution. It al
 so shines a light on the rich cultural heritage of the Kurdish people\, in
 cluding the ancient tradition of Dengbêj and the enduring spirit of the Y
 ezidi community. Together\, these films weave a powerful narrative of resi
 stance\, leadership\, and cultural preservation.\n\nThe event will begin b
 y a musical performance by Cihan Çelik and Sama Ali. The screening of Ez
 da and Jinwar will be followed by a discussiong between filmmaker Halim
 e Akturk\, human rights activist Rez Gardi\, and curator Xeyal Qertal.\n\n

 ish\, Rojava (West Kurdistan)\, 2024\, 41 mins.\nKurdish and Arabic with E
 nglish Subtitles\nDocumentary\n\nIn 2017\, a group of women set out to cre
 ate an all-women village in North-East Syria (Rojava). They built it using
  traditional materials and techniques. Once completed\, Jinwar welcomed wo
 men refugees from male violence. By participating in the common life\, bas
 ed on agriculture and handicrafts\, women villagers forge new identities a
 nd build better lives for themselves. At the same time they create a new w
 orld.\n\nVOICES OF RESISTANCE AND HERITAGE: Stories of Kurdish Women and 
 Culture is curated by Xeyak Qertel and is co-presented by ArteEast an
 d The Clemente Center. This program is part of the legacy program Unpack
 ing the ArteArchive\, which preserves and presents 20 years of film and vi
 deo programming by ArteEast. Selections from VOICES OF RESISTANCE AND HER
 ITAGE will be screened in-person at The Clemente Center on March 18 f
 ollowed by a discussion with Halime Akturk and Rez Gardi moderated by the
