American Egyptian Strategic Alliance (AESA) and Egyptian American Rule of Law Association (EARLA) Share Concern for President Morsi's Constitutional Declaration
The American Egyptian Strategic Alliance (AESA) and the Egyptian American Rule of Law Association (EARLA) share the concerns expressed by other Egyptian rights organizations and civil society advocates regarding President Morsi’s constitutional declaration of November 22, 2012 in which he granted himself unprecedented and far-reaching powers.
While we understand the frustration and gridlock that led to this decision, no individual or institution, not even a democratically elected one, has the right to place itself above the law.
On January 25, 2011, the Egyptian people took to the streets to demand an end to a dictatorial administration and called for establishment of a government that respects the rights and freedoms of the people. As Egypt continues along the path toward a stable democracy, it is imperative that Egypt adopt a constitution consistent with the aspirations of all Egyptians, one which ensures transparency, the rule of law, and respect for fundamental freedoms.
The current crisis has already sparked violence that has led to the death of at least one Egyptian and left hundreds of others injured. We condemn any and all such violence, and call upon Egyptian authorities to investigate and prosecute those responsible, regardless of their identity, including violence by state security services.
We urge all sides to refrain from further inflammatory rhetoric and accusations, and call on all parties to come together to resolve their differences through peaceful dialogue. Only through dialogue and consensus-building will Egyptians be able to secure a stable, prosperous and democratic future.
