Culinary Walking Tours Return For Spring With New Michigan Avenue Tour

posted on: Apr 12, 2016

Another delicious season of the Arab American National Museum’s (AANM) Yalla Eat! Culinary Walking Tours returns with a new Michigan Avenue-based tour. Beginning 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, participants will have the opportunity to explore the East Dearborn commercial district along the Michigan Avenue corridor. The tour features more than a dozen Arab American food establishments including restaurants Mocha Café, Sheeba II, Adonis, Habib’s Cuisine and the plentiful Dearborn Fresh grocery store located just north of AANM.

Yalla Eat! (Arabic for Let’s go eat!) is an immersive culinary experience allowing participants to explore the culinary contributions of the country’s most concentrated Arab American population, while learning about the history and impact of the Arab American community on metro Detroit.

Many of the businesses on the Michigan Avenue tour have opened within the past few years and have quickly established a devoted following. Some are owned and operated by young Arab American entrepreneurs and represent the diversity of the community in metro Detroit, showcasing Yemeni and Lebanese cuisine, as well as fusion spots for burgers and pizza with an Arab American twist.

“The Arab American community of East Dearborn continues to transform the cultural landscape, this time by helping to rejuvenate the Michigan Avenue corridor, much as they did along Warren Avenue in the 1980s,” said Dr. Matt Stiffler, AANM content and research manager. “This walking tour will feature many of the businesses that are a part of this change.”

Guided by AANM docents, participants will meet business owners eager to share the story of their family-run enterprises while enjoying generous samples of traditional Arabic cuisine. Tour participants will sample diverse food offerings, learn about the history of Arab Americans in Dearborn and metro Detroit while experiencing firsthand the changing cultural landscape of East Dearborn.

All tour participants will receive a Yalla Eat! shopping tote, a Yalla Eat! culinary map of Dearborn (for self-guided exploration) and one complimentary admission to AANM. Each tour lasts approximately 2.5 hours and comfortable walking shoes are encouraged.
