John Sexton
Award for Individual Achievement

“The status quo is not an option. We’re in for what I call a radical restructuring of higher education today.” John Sexton established himself as a pioneer figure in the formation of the Global Network University as the President of New York University. Mr. Sexton helped make the idea of borderless education possible and has made great strides to improve U.S. relations with the rest of the world through the unifying force of education. It is this dedication to advancing equality of education, and nurturing the growth of intellectual exploration and exchange across national boundaries that we celebrate when we honor John Sexton with the Award for Individual Achievement at this year’s 2015 Kahlil Gibran Spirit of Humanity Awards Gala, on April 29 in Washington, DC.

John Sexton has dedicated his career to advancing innovative approaches to foster openness and tolerance in higher education and the global community. He has overseen the expansion of New York University to many cities around the world. Prior to joining New York University in 1981, John Sexton clerked for U.S. Chief Justice Warren Burger of the United States Supreme Court. His  academic leadership, and dedication to justice and equality are evident throughout his career. President Sexton is the recipient of many honorary degrees and was named a Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur, France’s highest honor. President Sexton is currently a Fellow at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

We are honored to present the award to John Sexton for his visionary approach to higher education and his dedication to establishing NYU as the first “Global Network University.” Mr. Sexton’s global vision for education as a way to advance society towards prosperity, tolerance, and mutual respect perfectly reflects the ideals of Kahlil Gibran’s writings and wisdom.

John Sexton will be with us along with fellow Gibran awardees Salma Hayek PinaultLawrence Wright, and Michael Baroody to celebrate our 17th annual Gibran Gala. I hope you will join us too. Please purchase your ticket today.
