Registration Open for Images and Perceptions of Arab Americans Diversity Workshop-Arabophobia in America: Myth or Reality

posted on: Sep 3, 2008

Registration is now open for Arab Detroit’s sixth annual educational workshop, “Images and Perceptions of Arab Americans: Arabophobia in America: Myth or Realty”

Arabophobia has been a part of Western culture since the Crusades. For centuries, the Arab has played the role of the greedy oil rich sheik, the villain or the seducer of women, hustler and thief. In the 20th century new images emerged depicting Arabs and Muslims as: the fanatical terrorist, the stone-thrower, the suicide bomber.

The workshop will examine Arabophobia in the U.S. and look at why the images of Arabs and Arab Americans are distorted and inaccurate.

The event will be attended by members of the print and broadcast media, business leaders, human resource directors, diversity program managers, advertising, marketing and communications professionals, educators, municipal and government employees, law enforcement personnel, community leaders and those interested in learning more about Arab Americans.

The workshop will be held at the University of Michigan-Dearborn on Thursday, October 23, 2008 from 8:30am-2:00pm.
