This short film, Mehchi, takes place in São Paulo, Brazil, where the filmmaker Mathias Mangin interviews his 97-year-old Lebanese grandmother. The two prepare a traditional Arabic dish of stuffed grape leaves, and talk about the role of Middle Eastern cuisine in her life. “Although she cooks Lebanese food, for me, it’s the taste of Brazil,” says Mangin. The film is endearing and the grandmother is adorable—Mangin’s piece is a visual testament to the inextricable link between food and cultural heritage.

This is the second in a series of short films from Grandmas Project, a collaborative web series under the patronage of UNESCO that shares the stories and recipes of grandmas around the world, filmed by their grandchildren. You can watch the first one here, about eggnog. If you are interested in contributing your own film to the series, you can apply here.
