Abbas to tell UN Palestinians no longer feel bound by Israel accords, say PA officials

posted on: Sep 8, 2015

The Palestinian Authority leadership is preparing for what officials call a broad diplomatic campaign whose centerpiece will be an address by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to the UN General Assembly later this month.

Senior Palestinian officials say the speech will be a watershed in the relationship between the PA and Palestine Liberation Organization with Israel, on the one hand, and the international community on the other. There is widespread speculation that Abbas wants to stop security cooperation with Israel, renounce the Oslo Accords, including the Paris agreement that governs economic relations with Israel, and dismantle the Palestinian Authority.
Palestinian leaders admit to being disappointed that the issue of the Iranian nuclear program has seemingly been resolved while no progress was made on the Palestinian issue; now, they note, the world is focused on Syria and the refugees streaming into Europe.
