ADC President Invited by Senate Leadership to Discuss Civil Rights Priorities
Former Congresswoman Hon. Mary Rose Oakar; President of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), today joined US Senate leaders including Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), Judiciary Committee Chair Patrick Leahy (D-VT), and Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) as part of the Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee’s Meeting on Civil Rights.
Representing ADC, Oakar was called upon by Senator Stabenow to address the participants. ADC’s presentation included the findings and recommendations of the ADC “Report on Hate Crimes and Discrimination,” (ADC Report) (See: http://www.adc.org/PDF/hcr07.pdf ).
Further, the ADC Report findings will be inserted into the Congressional Record by Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Patrick Leahy (D-VT) as part of a hearing on hate crimes scheduled for tomorrow Thursday June 25, 2009.
Oakar also discussed challenges specific to the Arab-American community in the 2010 Census. ADC is a long-term member of the US Census Advisory Committee (CAC).
Others who provided presentations at this morning’s Senate leadership meeting included the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the Asian American Justice Center (AAJC), the National Urban League, and the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (LCCR); of which ADC is the only Arab-American organizational and Executive Committee member.
