An Alternative to Heat Straightening: The Kardoune
By: Nourelhoda Alashlem/Contributing Writer

Recently trending across social media, the kardoune has resurfaced as a go-to “heatless straightening” method, gaining the attention of beauty influencers and millions of viewers online.
Originally an Algerian Kabyle hair practice, it is a long cotton ribbon used to wrap and smooth hair overnight, a natural alternative to heat styling without damage. Beyond its viral appeal, it remains part of a much older tradition carried by women across generations, taught by mothers and passed to daughters as a form of care.
The kardoune is practiced across the Maghreb today, with versions such as 3oksa in Tunisia and lefa in Libya.
A Traditional Method Across North Africa
The Kardoune is a long, flat, elastic fabric ribbon used traditionally to wrap around hair to keep it straight, smooth, and protected. It is made of cotton and is usually red and yellow, but modern versions can be found in a variety of colors and patterns while still maintaining the traditional striped pattern.
The Kardoune works on all hair types, from curly, coiled, wavy, and straight textures. The technique is to dampen the hair, then tightly wrap the rope around the ends of the hair, and then leave it overnight before unwrapping it. By keeping the hair tightly compressed overnight, the Kardoune prevents frizz and gives a naturally straightened effect without damaging the hair structure.
While the technique is said to have originated from Algeria, specifically Kabylia (a region in Algeria), it is practiced throughout the Maghreb under different names.
It’s been used for generations to protect hair from frizz, minimize breakage, and keep it away from heat styling, which isn’t healthy for hair.

How to Use a Kardoune?
A Kardoune is easy to use and doesn’t require any specialized knowledge.
To achieve the best outcomes, follow these steps:
Step 1: Prepare Your Hair
Wash and condition your hair as usual.
Let it air dry until it’s slightly damp or completely dry.
Step 2: Brush and Secure Your Hair
Detangle your hair with a wide-tooth comb or brush.
Gather your hair into a low ponytail and secure it with a hairband.
Step 3: Wrap Your Hair with the Kardoune
Hold the Kardoune at the base of your ponytail and start wrapping it tightly around the hair.
Continue wrapping down to the ends, ensuring the hair stays flat and smooth.
Step 4: Secure the Ends
Tie the Kardoune securely at the bottom, making sure it stays in place overnight.
Step 5: Remove and Style
In the morning, gently remove the Kardoune rope and comb through your hair.
Some people leave their ends out when wrapping the kardoune, but the ends can be fully wrapped and covered instead to protect them from friction and prevent curling.
Enjoy your naturally straight and soft hair!

From Tradition to Trend
The kardoune continues to be a long-standing practice as part of Maghrebi women’s daily hair care routines. Beyond its function, it shows a deeper practice of care, where the tending of hair became a nostalgic, symbolic nightly ritual.
In recent years, platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have introduced the kardoune to a wider audience, where it is often framed as a “heatless straightening” technique. Influencers and beauty creators have contributed to its spread, increasing demand and interest in the kardoune.
Whether you’re looking to protect your hair, reduce heat damage, or embrace and reconnect with your cultural ancestral identity, the Kardoune is an excellent addition to your hair care routine.
