A national museum is once again honoring tales of the Arab experience told through fiction, nonfiction and poetry.

The Arab American National Museum on Tuesday announced the winners of its annual Arab American Book Award.

The poetry award went to Philip Metres’ “A Concordance of Leaves,” an epic wedding poem recalling the author’s visit to the Palestinian West Bank for his sister’s wedding. The fiction honor went to “The Corpse Washer” by novelist, poet and translator Sinan Antoon.

The museum in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn says the competition is designed to recognize outstanding books by and about Arab Americans.

The ceremony will be held Sept. 20 in Minneapolis. It’s during the biennial meeting of the cultural and literary organizations Mizna and Radius of Arab American Writers.
