Arab Art & Education Initiative Launches in the Big Apple

Otherwise known as the Big Apple, New York will be home to the Arab Art & Education Initiative (AAEI), which launched on 13th October 2018. The AAEI will be hosting a special year-long arts program that will oversee artist talks, exhibitions and educational initiatives within the city’s schools and universities.
Set to run from October 13th-24th, there will be programs in collaboration with various cultural organizations running as well as a variety of exhibitions and events that look something like this:
Brooklyn Museum
Syria, Then and Now: Stories from Refugees a Century Apart – ongoing until Jan. 13, 2019
This particular exhibit reveals the discovery of medieval ceramics in Raqqa in the early 20th century and also discusses the present-day refugee crisis in Syria. Brooklyn Museum’s collection of Islamic Art will also be showcased alongside the work of three contemporary Arb artists, Mohamad Hafez, Issam Kourbaj and Ginane Makki Bacho.

Poets of Little Syria Guided Tours – Tours on Sunday, Sunday, Oct. 21, 2018
Tours for what was once known as “Little Syria” will be available at the Washington Street Society, which is an enclave in the Washington Street area of Lower Manhattan that once served as the cultural and economic heart of Arab America from the 1880s until the 1940s.

Arab Street Artists Program – ongoing until Oct. 24, 2018
Street art and graffiti has been transforming cities around the world since it was made famous in New York in the 1970s. A series of artists from the Arab world including, Athier Mousawi and Abdullah Qandeel and Dubai-based Tahreek Studio, will engage with the history of the form and its contemporary innovations in the Middle East as it launches it’s first commission this month.
2 Bridges Music Arts – ongoing until Oct. 24, 2018
2 Bridges Music Arts will showcase a curated selection of music, artists’ books, original artworks and graphic design posters from the Arab World in their Chinatown location.
