Many English words are derived from Arabic, especially words that relate to science, which indicates that Europeans heavily borrowed from Middle Eastern scientists in the Middle Ages. Borrowed words include: alcohol, algebra, alkali, almanac, amalgam, chemistry, elixir, lemon, magazine, sodium, zero, tobacco, guitar, and traffic.
