Cinetopia takes the movie outdoors to celebrate its opening night

posted on: Jun 7, 2015

Of the hundreds of people who attended Friday night’s free outdoor screening of “Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet,” at least one welcomed the gusts of cold, wet wind that almost forced the event indoors.

“The wind gets mentioned early in the film,” said Peterson Cullimore of Detroit, a blanket over his shoulders on the way out of the screening on the lawn of the Detroit Institute of Arts. “So when that line came, and the wind picked up at just that moment, it gave me a chill. It really worked with the setting.”

Cullimore rode bikes and brought a picnic dinner with five friends to the outdoor screening, which was the official kickoff for the Cinetopia International Film Festival. The fourth annual event runs through next Sunday with over 70 films at various venues in metro Detroit and Ann Arbor.
