Dearborn Museum's Founding Director Named Arab American of the Year

The founding director of the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn is being honored as the institution marks its 15th anniversary.
Anan Ameri was named 2020 Arab American of the Year by ACCESS, of which the museum is part. Officials were planning to formally present the award to her March 6 at the ACCESS 49th Annual Dinner.
ACCESS said in a release that Ameri has “dedicated her career to advocating for social justice and equity, immigrant rights and uplifting and preserving Arab American stories.” The organization added that Ameri “”literally created a space for Arab Americans to feel at home.”
Ameri, a Palestinian sociologist, activist and author, joined ACCESS in 1997 and retired in 2013. ACCESS was founded as the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services in Dearborn.
ACCESS said the event’s program will focus on the empowerment of women and highlight the work it’s doing to help women, particularly in what it calls “marginalized communities.”
The dinner will be held at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center.
