Demand TPS for Syria Now!

posted on: Mar 7, 2012

As a result of the continuing violence in Syria the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) filed a formal petition with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) requesting that Temporary Protected Status (TPS) be granted to Syrian nationals currently present in the United States. Due to the worsening situation on the ground in Syria and the mounting number of deaths, it has become eminently clear that the forced return of civilians poses a grave threat to their personal safety.

The momentum and support for TPS is growing. With the help of the Syrian Emergency Task Force (SETF) and United for Free Syria (UFS), ADC has built and led a coalition of nearly 100 diverse organizations supporting the effort.

ADC is communicating with Administration officials from the White House, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of State, on behalf of the community, on a daily basis.

Joint congressional efforts with SETF and UFS have resulted in support from key Congressional Members. Congressman Howard Berman, Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Congressman John Conyers, Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, sent a joint letter to President Obama urging for the approval of ADC’s TPS request.

Momentum is also growing on the Senate side as six US Senators recently sent a letter to President Obama urging for the approval of ADC’s request. The signatories included US Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Ben Cardin (D-MD) and Bob Casey (D-PA).

To keep the momentum going ADC asks that you take action now and contact your member of Congress, along with President Obama, and ask that ADC’s TPS Request be granted! When you are done taking action please be sure to forward to your contacts and ask they do the same! Together we can do our part in getting this done!
