As Iraqis head to the polls in November 2025, what do the elections reveal about the country’s struggles over power, governance, and survival? In Contested City: Citizen Advocacy and Survival in Modern Baghdad, Alissa Walter, associate professor of history at Seattle Pacific University, shows how Iraqis have long negotiated with state officials, militias, and political parties to survive and assert their rights. In this Crown Seminar, Walter is joined by Marsin Alshamary, assistant professor of political science at Boston College, for a conversation that places the upcoming elections within this longer history—from Saddam Hussein’s era to the present—highlighting Iraq’s current challenges and the resilience of its citizens. Alissa Walter is associate professor of history at Seattle Pacific University. Marsin Alshamary is assistant professor of political science at Boston College.
