Wednesday | The Senator Menendez Indictment: Foreign Interference, Military Aid to Egypt, and the Future of US-Egypt Relations

On September 22, 2023, Democratic New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez was indicted on three counts of conspiracy for allegedly using his position to benefit the government of Egypt in exchange for hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of bribes that he and his wife Nadine Menendez accepted between 2018 and 2022 from New Jersey businessmen Wael Hana, Jose Uribe, and Fred Daibes, including gold bars, cash, and a luxury convertible. Federal prosecutors accuse Menendez of conspiracy to commit bribery, conspiracy to commit honest services fraud, and conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right, allegedly part of efforts to increase and release holds on US military aid to Egypt, provide Egyptian officials with sensitive information about US embassy employees in Cairo, manufacture Senate support for the release of $300 million in aid to Egypt, and do favors for the three New Jersey businessmen, including Hana, an Egyptian American who ran a lucrative monopoly business certifying halal meat exports to Egypt. In response to calls from fellow Democrats for him to resign, Senator Menendez has relinquished his position as chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, but continues to hold public office and has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Arab Center Washington DC (ACW) and the Center for Security, Race, and Rights (CSRR) at Rutgers University Law School are convening a panel of experts to discuss the details of the indictment of Senator Robert Menendez and its implications for US foreign policy, in addition to larger corruption issues in the US foreign policy apparatus, the role of money in US politics and foreign interference, US military aid to Egypt, human rights conditions in Egypt, and the future of US-Egypt relations.
