International Singer Chantal Chamandy to Perform Exclusively at ADC National Convention

posted on: Feb 28, 2008

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) is proud to present a special performance by international singer and songwriter Chantal Chamandy at this year’s 2008 National Convention, “Securing the Principles of Liberty” which will be held June 12-15 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Washington, DC.

Exclusive to the purchase of full Convention packages is a special 90-minute performance by Chamandy entitled, “Beladi.” The performance is open to ADC Convention attendees only; individual tickets will not be sold for this event.

In September 2007, Chamandy performed “Beladi” in Egypt before a capacity audience of over 5,000 people, becoming the first person ever to be granted permission to hold and film a concert at the feet of The Great Sphinx. One of the aims of the project was to showcase the importance of culture and art in the Middle Eastern experience as opposed to the negative images constantly seen around the world.

“There are so many negative portrayals about the Middle East, I wanted to turn that around and show some of the good things,” said Chamandy. “I know I can’t change the entire world simply with my music, but I would like to think that every little bit helps. Music can be very powerful, and by doing what I did, I hope to play a positive role by promoting peace through culture.”

Chamandy’s performance of “Beladi” live at the Pyramids of Egypt will debut on PBS stations across the US in March. The first scheduled airing will be Sunday, March 2, 2008. For a full schedule of airings for “Beladi” on local PBS stations, please visit: http://www.arabdetroit.com/news.php?id=46
