Journalist, Pulitzer Prize Winner Anthony Shadid Remembered at Book Awards
Celebrate 2011’s best books by and about Arab Americans, and pay tribute to Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Anthony Shadid (1968-2012) at the 2012 Arab American Book Award Ceremony at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Arab American National Museum, 13624 Michigan Ave. in Deaborn.
Shadid, the two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist of Lebanese American descent, was known globally for his intrepid reporting and incisive on-the-ground coverage of stories across the Middle East. He died while on the job earlier this year. During his career, Shadid reported for The Associated Press, The Washington Post and The New York Times. In addition to his prolific journalism, Shadid was an author; his most recent book, a memoir entitled House of Stone, was published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt shortly after his death.
At the 2012 Book Award ceremony, Shadid will be honored with a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award to be accepted by his wife, Nada Bakri, a journalist for The New York Times.
Guests at the event will also enjoy a temporary exhibit of Shadid artifacts in the AANM Library & Resource Center, and be among the first to view the new Anthony Shadid entry in the AANM’s permanent Making an Impact exhibit.
The evening also includes a strolling buffet, open bar and live music, followed by the ceremony and a book signing with winning authors including Diana Abu-Jaber. A full list of this year’s winners appears below.

The Arab American Book Award program encourages the publication and excellence of books that preserve and advance the understanding, knowledge and resources of the Arab American community by celebrating the thoughts and lives of Arab Americans. The purpose of the Award is to inspire authors, educate readers and foster a respect and understanding of the Arab American culture.
The winning titles are chosen by groups of selected readers from across the country including respected authors, university professors, artists, librarians and poets. The AANM first gave these awards in 2007 for books published in 2006.
