Meet the Arabs that Competing in American League Sports

While the Arabic countries have had significant growth in athletics, some players have gained huge success in leagues outside the country. In this guide, we will feature the top Arabs who have had outstanding performances in the American League Sports. 

Salah Mejri

Salah Mejri is a basketball player who currently plays in Dallas Mavericks, competing in the National Basketball Association. He was born in the northern Tunisian city of Jendouba. His signing with the Dallas Mavericks made him the first Tunisia player in the history of the NBA. Mejri has played in several other top teams, including Real Madrid, where he averaged 4.3 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 0.7 blocks a night in up to 42 games. His career began in 2006, playing for Sousse’s Étoile Sportive du Sahel.

He later moved to  Antwerp Giants, where he played for two years before joining Spain’s Onradoiro, where he was crowned the Spanish League’s Rising Star. This recognition would see him sign a contract with Real Madrid in 2013. Mejri became the first Arab player to win the Euroleague and the Spanish League in 2014-15.

Justin Meram

Justin Meram is a professional footballer who plays as a winger for Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer. He was born in Michigan United States, but his parents were immigrants from Mosul hence why he also represents the Iraq national team. He started his career playing with the youth teams of Yavapai Roughriders and Michigan Wolverines. In 2011, Meram was drafted in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft by Columbus Crew, where he played as a winger.

He then made his professional debut the same year when he played against Real Salt Lake in the CONCACAF Champions League. Meram had his Major League Soccer debut on May 28, 2011, playing against Chivas USA. Popular among Arabic football fans and punters, Meram has played in several teams, including Orlando City and Atlanta United. Currently, he plays in Real Salt Lake, and if you are his enthusiastic fan, you can bet on his team at Betway in Arabic or any bookmaker that accepts Arabic players. 

Rami Sebei

Rami Sebei is a professional WWE wrestler who was born in Canada. However, his parents are Syrians who migrated from Homs. He wrestles under the name Sami Zayn. He made his debut in wrestling in 2002 with International Wrestling Syndicate (IWS). He performed for various wrestling promotions before joining the WWE in 2013. He won the PWG World Champion twice and World Tag Team Champion five times.

Additionally, Rami Sebei became the only wrestler to win both the annual 2010 and 2011 tournaments of PWG; Dynamite Duumvirate Tag Team Title Tournament and Battle of Los Angeles. He has had other incredible achievements, such as winning the IWS World Heavyweight Champion twice. He also won the ROH World Tag Team Championship and the ROH World Television Championship. 

Oday Aboushi

Born in 1991, Aboushi is a professional NFL player. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Palestinian parents who migrated from Beit Hanina to the United States. He played college football at the University of Virginia from 2009 to 2012. In his senior year, he was selected as part of the first team in the All-Atlantic Coast Conference. He began his professional career when he signed a contract with New York Jets.

Aboushi played for the team until 2015, when he joined Houston, Texas, in September 2015. He has also played for Seattle Seahawks, Oakland Raiders, Arizona Cardinals, and Detroit Lions. In 2021, he signed a contract with Los Angeles Chargers.
