The Story of SAMS: Syrian American Physicians at the Frontlines of Humanity

For more than two decades, physicians of the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) have stood at the frontlines of humanitarian medicine delivering life-saving care in places where conflict, displacement, and devastation have made healing extraordinarily difficult. Founded and led by doctors of Syrian descent, SAMS is driven by a shared professional and moral commitment: to save lives, alleviate suffering, and uphold the dignity of patients wherever care is most urgently needed.

What began in 1998 as a professional association for Syrian-American physicians in the United States focused on education, collaboration, and service evolved into a physician-led humanitarian movement. In 2007, the establishment of the SAMS Foundation marked a turning point, enabling doctors to translate professional solidarity into direct medical relief for communities affected by the humanitarian crisis, particularly in Syria.

Over A Decade of Relentless Crisis Response

Over the past decade, Syria has faced one of the most severe humanitarian crises of modern times. More than 16.5 million people rely on humanitarian assistance, and nearly half of the country’s healthcare facilities remain damaged or partially functional.

Throughout these overlapping emergencies, SAMS physicians have responded with consistency and resolve. During chemical attacks, doctors treated mass casualties while coping with severe shortages and personal risk. During the COVID-19 pandemic, SAMS medical teams provided testing, personal protective equipment, and patient care, while continuing emergency and trauma services. In 2023, following the devastating Türkiye–Syria earthquake, SAMS doctors were among the first responders, treating the injured, coordinating emergency supplies, and saving lives amid widespread destruction.

Across every crisis, SAMS physicians have remained guided by core medical values: clinical excellence, ethical care, and respect for human dignity.

Medicine Under Fire: When Doctors Took Healthcare Underground

SAMS’s story is defined by the courage and ingenuity of its physicians. As hospitals were deliberately bombed and practicing above ground became impossible, they moved medicine into caves and basements, turning darkness into sanctuary. Surgeons saved lives, obstetricians delivered babies, and nurses steadied the critically ill as airstrikes roared above. In the face of relentless danger, they upheld their oath, proving that humanity does not yield to war.

A Turning Point for Syria and for Syrian Physicians

On December 8, 2024, Syria reached a historic turning point with liberation, opening a new chapter focused not only on survival, but on rebuilding. For SAMS and its physicians, this marked a strategic shift from emergency response to long-term recovery and sustainable healthcare development.

“Our members serve with no expectation of reward, only the hope of healing,” said SAMS President Dr. Aref Rifai. “Now it’s time to turn that hope into something lasting.”

Through the Syria Health 2030 initiative, SAMS doctors are reopening hospitals, restoring medical networks, and training the next generation of healthcare professionals. Guided by a three-phase plan (1) Emergency Aid to Patients in Crisis, (2) Strengthening Health Systems, and (3) Establishing Centers of Excellence, they are rebuilding a resilient, equitable healthcare system for the future.

Today, SAMS supports more than 65 healthcare facilities across Syria, from Damascus and Aleppo to Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor. This nationwide network of hospitals, specialty centers, primary care clinics, maternity units, dialysis and oncology programs, and mobile teams delivers comprehensive care from trauma and surgery to cancer treatment, maternal and child health, chronic disease management, and mental health services, making it one of the largest physician-led humanitarian healthcare networks in Syria.

Honoring Service, Shaping the Future

As Syria moves toward rebuilding, SAMS physicians remain committed to healthcare as a human right and a foundation for recovery, advancing locally driven, ethical, and sustainable solutions so every Syrian, regardless of circumstance, can receive quality medical care.

This is more than a story of medicine. It is a story of devotion to a country, loyalty to its people, and a promise never to abandon those who needed them most. It is medicine practiced not only with skill, but with courage, sacrifice, resilience, and an unwavering hope for Syria’s future.
