Saudi Arabia have drawn their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Green Falcons drew 1-1 with Uruguay, a respectable result in a match where Uruguay were heavily favored.
Match Recap
The match started with Uruguay expectedly on the front foot, Saudi kept a low block with a strong defensive shape. The early offensive storm of the Uruguyans was weathered by some excellent goalkeeping by 34-year old Mohamed Al-Owais. One of the saves was a point blank parry that looked like it was going to be a certain goal in real time.
After about half of an hour, Saudi Arabia began to find openings on the counter-attack. They started to see more of the ball and had a huge chance that was heroically saved by Uruguay’s keeper Fernando Muslera. Just before the half, Saudi Arabia won a corner kick. Muslera saved the initial header off an excellent delivery, but the keeper’s parry left the ball right at the feet of Abdulelah Al-Amri, who scored on the rebound. Saudi Arabia went into the halftime dressing room in an excellent position, but work needed to be done in the second half to maintain a positive result.
As the second half began, questions were asked of Al-Owais in goal within seconds. Uruguay played a dangerous cross into the box that was headed on target. It required a diving effort from the goalkeeper to keep it out. Not long after, Manuel Ugarte of Uruguay hit the left post with a dangerous low driven shot. Uruguay equalized in the 80th minute of the game after a dangerous cross was played into the Saudi Arabia penalty box, a headed shot was rebounded after another save from Al-Owais in the Saudi goal. Uruguay’s equalizer ironically shared great resemblance to Saudi Arabia’s opener.
Georgios Donis is managing Saudi Arabia at a World Cup for the first time. Tactically we saw a healthy balance between expansive, attacking soccer, and pragmatic defensive soccer.
Implications of the Result
After Cape Verde’s stunning 0-0 draw with Spain, all four teams in Group H have 1 point. Saudi Arabia will face Spain in their second of the three group stage matches. Spain will be desperate to respond strongly to Monday’s result which has been labeled as a major embarrassment by the press.
Saudi Arabia will look to emulate some of the tactics implemented by Cape Verde as they will face a similar talent gap compared to Spain. They will face the World Cup debutants in their final group stage match. Goal differential will also be crucial as eight out of the twelve teams that finish 3rd in their group will advance to the Round of 32. Teams that are tied on points will be separated by the difference between goals scored, and goals conceded. If Saudi Arabia were to lose to Spain narrowly, it could be advantageous later on.
The World Cup so far for the Arab World
The last time Saudi Arabia reached the knockout stage of a World Cup was when the United States last hosted the tournament in 1994. It was their best performance at a World Cup.
Saudi Arabia joined three other Arab nations in collecting their first point of the tournament on the opening matchday. Tunisia were the only Arab country to lose their opening match as of June 15th. Their 5-1 defeat at the hands of Sweden have led to a rare managerial firing mid-tournament. An event that indicates severe turmoil behind the scenes.
Saudi Arabia vs Spain will take place in Atlanta, GA and will kick off Noon ET on Sunday June 21st.
