Holiday Season is not the Same

This holiday season in Lebanon is unlike previous years, mainly due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The ongoing war in Palestine has cast a somber shadow over most of the Arab World, leaving many in Lebanon in a state of sadness and mourning. Additionally, the spillover of the conflict into the southern borders of Lebanon have hit a little too close to home, affecting some Lebanese people on a personal level. Tens of thousands of Lebanese individuals are now internally displaced and many expats find themselves unable to visit Lebanon during this challenging time.

Amidst these challenging circumstances, the usual Christmas festivities are still taking place however with a sense of reflection and solidarity. Rather than solely focusing on the celebratory aspects, many people are now coming together to support one another and raise awareness about the pressing humanitarian issues that the conflict has generated. While the joyous spirit of the season persists, there is a collective acknowledgment that this holiday season holds a unique significance, emphasizing the need for compassion and empathy towards others during those tough times.

The people of Lebanon are therefore finding ways to celebrate the holiday season while focusing on the “giving back aspect” of it. Acts of kindness, charity initiatives, and efforts to provide support to those directly affected by the conflict are becoming integral components of this year’s holiday season experience.

Christmas Festivities

In the heart of winter, Lebanon transforms into a festive wonderland with Christmas celebrations lighting up cities across the country. Among the most known events is the Batroun Festival, welcoming visitors in the Old Souk from December 1st until January 7th. New Year’s Eve

Lebanon, known for its vibrant party scene, particularly comes alive during the festive season, with New Year’s Eve standing out as a pinnacle of celebration. However, it’s essential to acknowledge that amidst this year’s circumstances, individuals may opt for a more quiet and low-key celebration. Some might prefer an intimate dinner surrounded by close friends and family within the comforts of their homes. Alternatively, others may choose a serene retreat with their loved ones, seeking comfort in the company of those closest to them.

For those seeking the festive atmosphere outside their homes, Lebanon offers a wide variety of options for a wide range of people. Many restaurants in the country host special New Year’s events, catering to diverse tastes. Whether you’re in the mood for a cozy dinner, a lively party with a DJ, or a more relaxed evening with good music, the choices are abundant. The large choice of restaurants offer a chance for people to create their perfect New Year’s Eve, from upscale dining to casual eateries, ensuring that there is something for everyone’s preference.

Simultaneously, throughout the country, numerous events unfold, adding to the rich tapestry of New Year’s Eve celebrations. Whether through themed gatherings, cultural events, or community festivities, Lebanon gives plenty of choices for those seeking alternatives to traditional revelry. The diversity of options ensures that residents and visitors alike can find the perfect setting to leave the old year behind and welcome the new one in a manner that resonates with their individual spirit.

Despite the challenges, Lebanon is resilient. In the spirit of the season, the people are coming together with acts of kindness, charity initiatives, and efforts to support those directly affected by the conflict. The Holliday season may not be the same as before, but the Lebanese people are demonstrating enduring strength and unity in navigating through this difficult period.
