Supporters Of Immigration Museum Appeal To President Obama
WASHINGTON (AP) — Supporters of an immigration museum on the National Mall are now appealing directly to President Barack Obama to jump-start the project.
A coalition of scholars and ethnic group leaders sent a letter to the president on Thursday asking him to create a commission to study a possible immigration museum. It would be called the National Museum of the American People and would track the arrival of migrants and immigrants into the country.
The coalition says no new funding is needed to create a presidential commission to study the project. A similar commission established by President Jimmy Carter led to the creation of the United States Holocaust Memorial Commission.
Supporters of the project had previously appealed to Congress to establish a commission, but those efforts have not been successful.
