US Campaign for Palestinian Rights Statement Regarding End of US Aid to UNRWA

posted on: Sep 1, 2018

The US Campaign for Palestinian Rights issued the following statement regarding the Trump administration’s announcement that the US will end all financial assistance to UNRWA–the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees:

The decision to cut all US funding to UNRWA, the UN agency that serves 5 million Palestine refugees across the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan, is yet another demonstration of the Trump administration’s cruelty to some of the most marginalized and vulnerable people in the world. Trump has indicated that cuts to funding are an attempt to force Palestinians to the negotiating table, a clear admission of holding humanitarian aid—that covers education, healthcare, and emergency relief—hostage for political purposes. The Palestinian refugee crisis continues today only because Israel continues to refuse repatriation for Palestinians who were expelled from their homes, towns, and villages 70 years ago.

This administration seems to think it can make unilateral decisions for the Palestinian people: about the status of Jerusalem, their futures, and their very identities. But Palestinians are not afforded their human rights by the Trump administration, UNRWA, the international community, or any other actors—their human rights are inalienable.

“If the Trump administration has proven anything, it is that the Palestinians are absolutely right to reject American mediation between them and the Israelis since Washington’s and Tel Aviv’s positions are increasingly becoming indistinguishable,” said Yousef Munayyer, USCPR Executive Director.
