Mamoun Sakkal
Manfa Watan/Exile Homeland, 2014
Archival digital print on canvas, 36 in wide x 48 in high
An excerpt from the Syrian writer, Nairouz Malik, the text reads, “Exile (manfa) may substitute for killing, but it will not substitute for homeland (watan).” The italicized words in Arabic are highlighted in the art, lending the work its title.

The elegant angular modern typeface, called Bustan (garden), represents a collaboration between Dr. Mamoun Sakkal and Syrian calligrapher Jamal Bustan, who was inspired by a traditional Kairawani Kufic style combined with a cursive Sunbuli script. With support of Aida Sakkal’s programming skills, Dr. Sakkal developed and released the proportional typeface, suitable for Arabic, Persian, and Urdu.
