From May 11-13, 1,700 students from 94 schools in more than 30 cities from around the world, will convene at the Grand Hyatt in New York City for the 2017 Global Classrooms International Model UN conferences, one of the largest chapters of the MUN programming worldwide.

Representing the U.S., Italy, Taiwan, China, Japan, Republic of Korea, Sweden, Italy, Germany, Uzbekistan, Spain, Turkey, Lebanon, Qatar, United Kingdom, Mexico, Jamaica, and Panama among other nations, participants will focus their gathering on the role of social corporate responsibility in engaging youth in social entrepreneurship on a world-scale.

“The world is a global village needing global solutions in the sectors of food, energy, environment, equality, education, health, peace building, technology, integration of minorities and refugees and more,” said Elie Samia, Assistant Vice President for Outreach and Civic Engagement for LAU’s Division of Student Development and Enrollment Management, “For this reason, we chose such a theme.”

Global Classrooms International Model UN is the flagship education program of the Lebanese American University. Operated since 1999 by the United Nations Association of the United States of America, since 2016, LAU now heads the esteemed GCI brand in New York City.

Led by more than 97 student trainers, the future global leaders will also have the opportunity to meet with key figures in the fields of diplomacy and international relations, including the closing ceremony’s keynote speakers, Neemat Frem, President and CEO of INDEVCO Group, a Lebanon- based multinational manufacturing Group, and Radia Funna from the UN Innovation Unit.

The goal of the conference is to equip students with the UN culture of global awareness by allowing them to step into the shoes of ambassadors and debate and negotiate on the most critical global issues of our time.
