ADC Announces Additional Award Recipients

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) is proud to announce additional awards to be presented during the 2012 ADC National Convention next week at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.

The following awards will be presented:

1) The Hala Salaam Maksoud Leadership Award is given every year to members of the community who have shown outstanding commitment and leadership. This year’s award will be given to Mr. Anas ‘Andy’ Shallal, an Iraqi-American businessman and activist whose Busboys & Poets bookstores have become Washington DC landmarks and have hosted prominent activists like Harry Belafonte, Amiri Baraka and many more luminaries from around the world.

2) The Volunteer Appreciation Award is given to a woman who demonstrates exceptional commitment to the Arab American community and its societal advancement through volunteerism activities. This year’s award will be given to Mrs. Oraib Shawa whose life activities revolve around her passion for empowering women through education about their rights, the importance of volunteerism and peaceful protest to help affect positive social change worldwide.

3) The Rose Nader Award is an annual award given to an individual with unwavering dedication and commitment to values of equality and social justice. This year’s award will be given to Mrs. Debbie Almontaser who is the founding principal of the Khalil Gibran International Academy — a New York Arab-themed public school — named after the Arab poet, Kahlil Gibran.

4) The Rachel Corrie Award is an annual award given to a person who shows dedication and commitment for a just and lasting peace in Palestine. This year’s award will be given to Colonel Ann Wright who is a former United States Army colonel and retired official of the U.S. State Department, known for her outspoken opposition to the Iraq War. She was also one of the passengers on the flotillas which tried to break the blockade of the Gaza Strip in June 2010.
