ADC Joins Effort for Coalition-Wide National Call-in Day to Limit Cluster Bombs

posted on: Mar 30, 2009

Weapons which lay devastating waste to civilian populations and infrastructure are not uncommon in the Middle East. In 2006, Israel used Cluster Bombs during its attacks on Lebanon leaving millions of unexploded ordinances across southern Lebanon which have claimed many lives in the months and years since the end of the war. The United States has also used these weapons in Afghanistan and in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia causing numerous civilian casualties.

Much progress has been made in the effort to prevent these horrific acts from ever happening again. Recently, President Obama ratified Protocols of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons codifying the ban of US use of cluster bombs under international law. More recently, Congress passed and President Obama signed the Omnibus Appropriations bill which included language to effectively and permanently ban the export of cluster bombs from the United States.

Now, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) is joining in this major national effort to promote human rights and you have an opportunity to take this effort a step further. Congress is currently considering legislation that would set a very high bar for US use of cluster bombs. The standards set by this legislation would effectively render the vast majority of the US cluster bomb ordinance unlawful if used.
