Arab American philanthropists raise $8K at one-of-a-kind Michigan event

A foundation dedicated to research and increased awareness of women’s cancer can now direct an additional $8,000 to its initiatives, thanks to a group of generous Arab American women.

Philanthropists at the Center for Arab American Philanthropy’s (CAAP) 100 Arab American Women Who Care event in Southeast Michigan on March 24, 2016, collectively raised the funds for the Foundation for Women’s Cancer.

For its third year in Michigan, CAAP’s 100 Arab American Women Who Care was held at the Michigan Design Center in Troy and brought together one hundred generous women of the Arab American community, who pooled their money to make a larger impact on a cause important to them. At the event—which included mingling, a delicious meal and the debut of CAAP’s new promotional video (https://youtu.be/WEefIrpUErU)—each attendee nominated a Michigan-based charitable nonprofit of their choice. Three charities were selected at random, and all attendees voted on one nonprofit to receive the proceeds collected at the event.

“Each year, the power and engagement generated by this event continues to exceed our expectations. Not only are we making a huge difference to worthy causes, we are showing Southeast Michigan that the Arab American community is actively involved in making our region a better place to live. We are but one hundred women, but our impact is incalculable,” said Rasha Demashkieh, CAAP Board Member and 100 Arab American Women Who Care Event Chair.

At previous 100 Arab American Women Who Care events, participants raised $9,000 for Safe Harbor for Women and $10,000 for The Belinda Sue Fund for Ovarian Cancer & Research. CAAP looks forward to supporting many more community organizations throughout this year and for years to come.
