Authentic Lebanese Food Goes Mobile

posted on: Aug 6, 2011

Shahiya.com knows about authentic Lebanese food. It was “shahiya”, meaning appetite in Arabic, that fueled its creation and so appetite became its name. With the goal of becoming the main destination of Middle Eastern recipes online, while at the same time keeping their culinary heritage alive and shareable, its three founders Carole Hani, Hala Labaki and Daniel Neuwirth, joined forces to create a user-generated go-to website for all food lovers. And now with a successful run online, boasting over 23,000 members, Shahiya.com has launched the Cook Lebanese – 101 recipes iPhone application.

“We were craving Lebanese cuisine while studying abroad, but couldn’t find a dependable online source,” said Co-founder Hala Labaki. “We were obliged to call our parents and friends for recipes, whereas Western cuisine recipes were easily available online. This is how we identified a need for an online platform that could provide reliable Middle Eastern recipes.” Frustrated by their experience abroad, the trio started Shahiya from their little office in Beirut, and from there, they have reached every corner of the world.

The Cook Lebanese Application pushes this reliability factor a bit further since each of the 101 recipes were personally tested, tasted and refined by the Shahiya team. Each dish has an English name next to its phonetic Lebanese name, a brief introduction, a simple step-by-step cooking method, preparation time, difficulty level and nutritional information – which is quite rare for Middle Eastern food. All of the ingredients used, are readily available anywhere in the world, and with a click of a button you can share the recipe of your choice by email.

“Whether you’re a novice or a seasoned chef, Lebanese in origin or someone who just wants to try delicious healthy cuisine, our recipes are meant for you. They are for people with a big appetite, who share our passion for food,” said Labaki.

Cook Lebanese is available for purchase on the <a href=”http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cook-lebanese-101-recipes/id443934198?mt=8&ls=1#”>iPhone App Store</a>.
