A Michigan-based philanthropic organization that helps nonprofit groups serving Arab-Americans nationwide has announced a round of grants.

The Center for Arab American Philanthropy of Dearborn says it is distributing 12 grants worth a total of $50,000 to recipients in California, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York and Pennsylvania.

Recipients include the San Francisco-based Arab Film Festival, which screens films from and about the Arab world, and the Iraqi and American Reconciliation Project of Minneapolis.

The center focused this year on efforts promoting fair treatment and portrayal of U.S. Arabs.

The philanthropy center was launched in 2005 by Dearborn-based ACCESS, founded as the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services.

ACCESS Chief Financial Officer Maha Freij says the philanthropic organization has reached $1 million in grant-making.
