Dubai Culture to Host Theatre Critiquing, Production Workshops
The Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), the Emirate’s dedicated authority for culture, arts, and heritage, will host an array of workshops in the runup to the eighth edition of the Dubai Festival for Youth Theatre, the Authority’s flagship initiative dedicated to preserving the age-old art form of theatre.
To be held from Aug.17-Sept.30, the workshops will place emphasis on theatre critiquing and theatre productions, enabling aspiring and emerging talent to benefit through mentoring sessions with experts from the industry.
In line with the announcement by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to nurture and promote the use of the Classical Arabic language, the workshops will also provide participants with the skills they need to creatively and accurately portray the Arabic language during their various performances.
Yasser Al Gergawi, Acting Projects and Events Director and the Director of Dubai Festival for Youth Theatre at Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, said, “As one of the region’s fastest-growing theatrical platforms, the Dubai Festival for Youth Theatre continues to serve as an incubator for emerging and aspiring theatre talent. The workshops will equip our participants with the skills they require to effortlessly and seamlessly put together their own productions, while enabling them to widen their skill set to complement the growth of the region’s theatre industry.”
The Theatre Critique workshop will focus on evaluating the performances during the Dubai Festival of Youth Theatre, and will commence on the first week with theory and five subsequent practical sessions. It will be held on Aug.17, 6 pm at the Hor Al Anz Library.
The production workshop aims to encourage the youth to learn more about the production aspects including finance, logistics and props, among others, scheduled to be held on Sept.1.
All workshops are free and will be open for female and male participants and will be conducted in Arabic. Successful participants will be granted a certificate from Dubai Culture.
As part of the workshops, the authority will host showcases of various sketches of plays inspired by the international and Arab theatre in malls across the city, to provide visitors with vivid insights on the burgeoning theatre landscape.
The mall performances will be held on weekends until Sept.30 after which they will be then shown at the Cultural and Scientific Association in Al Mamzar, until the end of the Dubai Festival for Youth Theatre.
The Dubai Festival for Youth Theatre continues to be one of the largest celebrations of theatre in the region, in an effort to strengthen and preserve one of the oldest art forms, by providing upcoming talent with a platform to showcase their skills to a wider audience.
