Explore the rich visual language and cultural meaning of one of the world’s most enduring art forms through the work and insight of master calligrapher Nihad Dukhan.
In this artist talk, Dukhan will explore Arabic calligraphy as both an aesthetic practice and a civilizational emblem, tracing its historical roots, spiritual dimensions, and contemporary relevance. Through images, personal reflections, and selected works, audiences will gain a deeper appreciation of calligraphy as a living tradition that continues to shape cultural identity across generations.
While at the museum, be sure to check out Sacred Lines, Luminous Pages: Exploring Arabic Calligraphy and Illumination with illuminator Behnaz Karjoo and calligrapher Khalid Casado, who will demonstrate their practices in the Great Hall from 1 to 3 p.m.
Both programs are presented in collaboration with Reed Society for the Sacred Arts.
Trained in the classical tradition in Istanbul, Dukhan holds multiple ijazahs from some of the most revered calligraphers of our time, including Hasan Çelebi, Mohamed Zakariya, and Abdul Razak Karakash. His training spans styles such as Thuluth, Naskh, Taliq, Deewani, and Deewani Jali. Alongside this rigorous classical foundation, he has developed a distinctive modern calligraphic style since 1989, expanding the expressive possibilities of the art form.
