First Arab Netflix Series ’Jinn’ Begins Filming

Jinn, the first Arabic-language original series on Netflix, began filming in Jordan on August 13.
The groundbreaking teen drama, set to stream in 2019, began principal photography with a fresh-faced cast in the capital city of Amman.
Mixing supernatural elements with soapy angst, the six-episode show will follow a group of Arab teens whose bonds and budding romances are put to the test when they unwittingly invite jinn, supernatural creatures, into their lives. Good battles evil in the midst of friendship, love and adventure.
Mira (Salma Malhas), a rebellious teen grieving the loss of her mother, learns to love again when she meets Keras (Hamza Abu Eqab), a jinn tasked with guarding the vigilante jinns. Meanwhile, Yassin (Sultan Al Khalil) builds a supernatural friendship with the vengeful Vera (Aysha Shahalthough), and Mira, Fahed (Yaser Al Hadi) and Layla (Ban Halaweh) must rescue him from her before it’s too late.
The drama will be directed by Mir-Jean Bou Chaaya (Very Big Shot).
“At Netflix, we’re always looking for local stories with an interesting and relatable perspective to bring to screens all over the world,” said Erik Barmack, vice president of international original series.
“With Jinn, we aim to create a fantastical show about young people in the Middle East in Arabic that’s real, authentic and action-packed.”
Executive producer and head writer Elan Dassani added: “Arab youth are just like teens everywhere, trying to find the balance between embracing modern culture whilst keeping true to their rich history.”
The series will launch worldwide next year.
