ForeWord Announces Dr. Jack Shaheen as Winner of 2008 Book of the Year Award
ForeWord magazine is pleased to announce that Dr. Jack Shaheen’s book “Guilty: Hollywood’s Verdict on Arabs After 911” was a winner of the 2008 Book of the Year Awards.
At a ceremony at BookExpo America in New York City, the 220 Book of the Year Award winners in 61 categories were honored.
These books, representing the best independently published books from 2008 were selected by a panel of librarian and bookseller judges.
220 winners were selected by dozens of librarians and booksellers who are experts in the subject matter of the books they judged, and who make purchasing decisions daily for their collections or bookstores.
ForeWord’s founder and publisher, Victoria Sutherland, spoke at the awards ceremony and announced the winners.
“Programs like the Book of the Year Awards help level the playing field,” she said. “It sounds almost cliché, but what does it really mean? Simply look around at the other national awards programs. There seems to be a prejudice against anything that isn’t from a larger house. ForeWord honors only those books coming from independent community, giving them the value they deserve.”
Dr. Jack Shaheen is an internationally acclaimed author and media critic and is a committed internationalist and a devoted humanist.
A Pittsburgh native and former CBS news consultant on Middle East Affairs, Shaheen’s lectures and writings illustrate that damaging racial and ethnic stereotypes of Asians, blacks, Native Americans and others injure innocent people. He defines crude caricatures, explains why they persist, and provides workable solutions to help shatter mis-perceptions.
In addition to Guilty: Hollywood’s Verdict on Arabs After 911, he is the author of Nuclear War Films, Arab and Muslim Stereotyping in American Popular Culture, The TV Arab and the award-winning book [and DVD] Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People.
