Hamtramck Launches Arab Mural Project

posted on: Dec 5, 2013

OneHamtramck LLC and the Arab American and Chaldean Council are teaming up to produce a large 30 x 90 foot mural which will be prominently displayed on the Sheeba Restaurant located on 8752 Jos. Campau St. in the predominantly Yemeni south end of Hamtramck. This work of art will be created by internationally renowned Chilean muralist, Dasic Fernandez, who has studied Arab art and design. Samples of his amazing art work can be seen at www.dasic.blogspot.com

The mural will visually represent the longstanding Arab community and its culture. This mural will bring national attention to one of the most diverse cities in the country, Hamtramck, and showcase the positive role Arabs have played in American life. It will help develop a better understanding and respect for one of the many ethnic groups making this city their home. Bill Meyer, Executive Director of OneHamtramck stated “by elevating a segment of Hamtramck society, the whole community benefits. The subject may be Arab culture and history but the artwork is for everyone.”

A Celebration Event will take place Saturday, December 7, 2013, from 1 pm to 4 pm at Peoples Community Services, 8625 Jos. Campau in Hamtramck. This will be a donor appreciation event and a celebration of the finalization of this unique and important project. You will have the opportunity to meet the Artist, Dasic Fernandez, who will be present to share photos of the finished mural. Media is invited.

This is a totally community funded project. Funding is still needed in order to reach our final goal. Tax-deductible donations can be made payable to ACC and mailed to OneHamtramck, 3016 Trowbridge, Hamtramck MI 48212. Major donors of $500 or more will receive recognition on a large plaque next to the painting. For further information, contact Bill Meyer at bill@onehamtramck or (313) 207-3904.
