How the Beirut Port Explosion Crumbled Lebanon

By: Amir Kobeissi / Arab America Contributing Writer
On August 4, 2020, Lebanon erupted when a devastating explosion in the Beirut port took the lives of hundreds and left thousands injured. The blast, which was caused by improperly stored ammonium nitrate, resulted in one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in world history. Some may believe that this explosion may not have been done accidentally, but there has not been enough clear and concise evidence to confirm this. Not only did this explosion lead to a great loss of life and infrastructure, but it also led to an economic collapse and political instability throughout the country.
The Day That Shook Lebanon
It was what seemed like an ordinary summer day in Beirut that would soon turn out to be a tragedy that would forever shape Lebanon’s history. A series of loud noises and bangs began before a massive eruption took place and left the city in shock. The explosions destroyed homes miles away and left entire towns in rubble. The footage of the explosion not only surprised residents but also came as a huge shock worldwide.
The cause of the blast was quickly discovered to be immense amounts of ammonium nitrate, which had been stored for years in one small area. This sparked many questions about the government’s role in ensuring civilian safety and how these dangerous materials could just be left unsupervised.
Aftermath of The Explosion
The results of the explosion were almost unbelievable; more than 200 people had died, and hundreds of thousands were displaced. Homes had been left to gather dust, and hospitals were overflowing with patients while already struggling with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Despite just the injuries people had faced, the blast was traumatizing, and survivors to this day continue to struggle from what they had experienced and lost from the explosion. Lebanese citizens were angry and vulnerable, as the tragedy served as an example of the absence and corruption of governmental roles in the country.

Economic Struggles
Lebanon’s economy was already going through a rapid decline before the explosion, and the blast just set everything back much further. It destroyed major parts of the infrastructure and heavily disrupted imports of essentials such as food and healthcare. This change resulted in putting even more families into a state of poverty. Costs to rebuild what was lost were in the billions, which was debt that Lebanon definitely couldn’t afford. Aid from other nations was coming in, but was largely done without the help of the Lebanese government. This shows the distrust people had in the government, and how countries wanted to make sure that the aid reached their citizens directly.
Reality of a Thriving Country
The Beirut port explosion wasn’t just one of the worst tragedies in the modern era, but also served as a symbol. Lebanon, having a rich culture and history, was brought down due to corruption and the ineffectiveness of government control. To this day, not knowing who we should hold accountable for such horror has created a divide between citizens and their leaders.
Future and Impact

Reconstructing Lebanon is so much more than just constructing new buildings and trying to get back what was lost. It is about creating a sense of power, dignity, and trust within the Lebanese people. Different organizations have shown awareness of this and have played a major role in what the state has seemingly failed to do.
The Beirut port explosion will be a day that most Lebanese will never forget. It showed the weakness and unimportance of huge chunks of the nation’s infrastructure. The consequences of years of a weak government came to be, and the people showed themselves to be resilient and hopeful despite having limited resources. Today, the anniversary of the explosion is seen as a national day of mourning. The day serves as a reminder to stay strong and remember what has been lost, but also how a lack of governance can come at the cost of its people. Today in Lebanon, hope for a future with prosperity and security seems only a dream.
