Jordanian Prince Decries Persecution of Christians in Vatican Radio Interview

posted on: Nov 12, 2014

Jordan’s Prince El Hassan bin Talal told Vatican Radio that “the fact that the Christians are suffering is abhorrent to all of us.”

The Jordanian leader, who has been a leading proponent of inter-religious dialogue in the Middle East, said that “the reality is that we are one community: Christians of Arab culture, Muslims of Arab culture.” He condemned the persecution of Christians, and told Vatican Radio that Christians working with relief agencies to serve refugees were “wonderful, noble people who are doing their utmost for the persecuted of this world.”

The Prince suggested that the Islamic world should undertake a “Vatican-type consultation” to establish a single authority that could speak for all of the Muslim world, embracing Sunni and Shi’ite believers. Such an authority, based in Mecca, could provide “a point of reference for discussion with the Vatican,” he said.
