Pathbreakers of Arab America—Shereen Abu Akleh

We continue to honor Shereen Abu Akleh as an Arab American pathbreaker. Shereen was originally our twentieth pathbreaker. Now we reprieve the earlier article, adding to it, because this coming May 11 is the second anniversary of Shereen’s murder. Abu-Akleh, a Palestinian American, our contributing writer, John Mason writes, was born in East Jerusalem on the occupied West Bank on April 3, 1971. She was an outstanding journalist, reporting all over the Arab World but focused on Palestine for Al-Jazeera. Abu Akleh was killed on May 11, 2022, in Jenin on the West Bank at age 51 from a bullet wound fired by an Israeli Defense Force soldier while she was reporting.

This is the fortieth of Arab America’s series on American pathbreakers of Arab descent. The series includes personalities from entertainment, business, sports, science, academia, journalism, and politics, among other areas. John Mason, contributing writer, reports on our fortieth pathbreaker, Jehan Noujaim, a renowned Arab American documentary filmmaker, born to a Lebanese father and American mother. Jehan is widely known for the art of storytelling, through film, especially in revealing the complexities of the lives of specific people living under conditions of strife and conflict. These are often Arab peoples.

The series includes personalities from entertainment, business, sports, science, academia, and politics, among other areas. Arab America contributing writer, John Mason, highlights our fifteenth pathbreaker, Ayman Mohyeldin, born in Egypt of an Egyptian father and Palestinian mother, who moved to the States when Ayman was five years old. He has made a truly remarkable impact on broadcast journalism in reporting on the 2011 ‘Arab Spring’ events in Cairo and across the Arab World and presently he continues his broadcast career with his own show on cable MSNBC TV. Ayman has prominently made clear his support of the Palestinian people.

Corporate America Shies Away from Arab American Initiatives

Much of corporate America has declined to actively support Arab American Heritage Month, mostly due to reactions from pro-Israel-Zionists. GEICO insurance is one firm that agreed, then disagreed to sponsor the initiative. Ben and Jerrys is the opposite, curtailing its ice cream production and sales in occupied Palestine and Israel. Contributing writer, John Mason, describes some of the negative stereotypes of Arabs that abound in American culture. Finally, we see how official U.S. policy is actively pro-Israel and therefore unfriendly to Arab Americans.
