Grim Prospects for Palestinian Reality of Self-Rule, Reputable American Scholars Assert

By: John Mason / Arab America Contributing Writer Three prominent American scholars express their pessimism about an equitable solution to the situation of occupied Palestinians. First, Noam Chomsky suggests that neither of the two-state/one-state solutions is viable and suggests a third alternative, one of ‘Greater Israel,’ which explicitly leaves out Palestinian population concentrations. Peter Beinart … Continued

If Jesus Were Alive Today—Would He be a Judean Jew, Palestinian Christian, Muslim Arab, or Something Else?

As we move into the Holy Week of Easter and the Jewish celebration of Passover, it is timely to ponder Jesus’ place in the geography and history of the Holy Land. John Mason, contributing writer, wonders with us that if Jesus were alive today, he would probably want to shed a light on injustice, resist authority, defend the oppressed and poor, and, generally, raise some Cain. But that is a philosophical, religious cut at how the expected Christ figure might act. History, ethnicity, language, religion, and politics would have circumscribed Jesus’ behavior in ways we can’t know. But we can suggest how these might have shaped our perception of the historical Jesus.

We believed that Arabs, especially Palestinians, and Muslims worldwide would have something positive to look forward to. Contributing writer John Mason renders a ‘B+’ grade for the Biden Administration’s support of Arab Americans and non-Arab Muslim-Americans. However, only a ‘D’ grade is rendered for Biden’s handling of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Realpolitik and Palestinian disillusionment with Biden’s approach portend continued faltering progress in achieving freedom and justice for Palestinians.

New Gallup Poll Shows Modest Shift in American Sympathies towards Palestinians

A recent Gallup Poll shows American Democrats sympathize more with Palestinians than Israelis for the first time, with Independents and Republicans still siding more with Israelis in the conflict. Contributing writer, John Mason, reports on the Poll’s generally low rating for the Palestinian Authority and the decline in favorability towards the Netanyahu Government. Israel over previous decades has been treated in a bipartisan way by Americans but now the parties are polarized. This was accentuated under Trump, when sharp political differences were exaggerated by an unswerving loyalty to Israel’s government.

China-brokered Saudi-Iran Détente Upsets U.S. Mideast Paradigm

Here, we review the recent China-brokered Saudi-Iran détente. It is suggested that this will upset U.S. and Israeli interests. Some critics say this move by China is a poke in the U.S. eye. Will it allow China to overtake the U.S. as Middle East power broker? Contributing writer John Mason details possible worries for Israel stemming from the Saudi deal with Iran. He also reviews what the détente might mean for Palestinians, especially in the backdrop of a rabidly right-wing and very hungry-for-territory Netanyahu government.
